This weight converter converts between kilograms, grams, milligrams, tons, pounds, and ounces simultaneously, using kilograms as the common base unit. The kilogram is unusual among SI base units for how recently its definition changed. For over a century it was defined by a single physical platinum-iridium cylinder kept in France, nicknamed "Le Grand K." On May 20, 2019, metrologists replaced that artifact-based definition with one tied to a fixed value of the Planck constant, measured using devices called Kibble balances — meaning the kilogram is now defined by an unchanging physical constant rather than an object that could theoretically gain or lose mass over time. Pounds and ounces, by contrast, descend from older Roman and medieval English trade weights, standardized much later into the international avoirdupois pound (exactly 0.453592 kg) used today.

Metric weight units (mg, g, kg, ton) scale by powers of 10 from the kilogram, while imperial units (pounds, ounces) use fixed historical ratios. Converting through kilograms as a common base keeps every pairing — like grams to ounces — mathematically consistent, since the calculator only needs one factor per unit rather than a separate factor for every possible pair.

The pound-to-kilogram factor (0.453592) isn't an arbitrary decimal — it's the result of the 1959 international agreement that formally standardized the avoirdupois pound across English-speaking countries at exactly 0.45359237 kg, replacing several slightly different national definitions that had existed until then. Ounces then follow directly, since 1 pound is defined as exactly 16 ounces.

Each figure represents the same physical mass, expressed on a different scale — grams and kilograms in most of the world, pounds and ounces in the US and UK for everyday use. None of the six values is more accurate than another; they describe an identical amount of matter.

For reference: an average adult weighs roughly 60-90 kg (132-198 lb), a standard checked airline bag limit is often 23 kg (about 50.7 lb), and a metric ton (1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb) is noticeably heavier than a US short ton (2,000 lb, about 907 kg) — a common source of confusion in freight and shipping contexts.
